3:20 Biofuels in Transition
Scott Kohl, Ph.D., Technical Director, ICM, Inc.
Biofuels hold the promise of substantial benefits to society
including renewable energy, lowering the carbon footprint, local energy
independence and economic stimulus. These promises need to be balanced with
proposed agricultural commodity capabilities and biofuels processing
technologies. The cellulosic biofuels “revolution” will come in a series of
logical steps from the current starch processing technology to full scale
cellulose conversion facilities as economics warrant. Along the way there will
be innovations that will help sustain and improve the future of production
agriculture and optimize land use by balancing caloric and energy growth around
the world. This presentation examines:
-
Current biofuel metrics
-
Food AND fuel production
-
Carbon footprint assessment and implications
-
Cellulosic derived biofuels
3:50 The State of Venture Capital Financing for
Advanced Biofuels Companies
John Hamer, Managing Director, Burrill and Company

resources needed for their future development. We will discuss venture
financing strategy and the pre-requisites for attracting venture capital, as
well as deal structures and how venture capital can create added value for
portfolio companies.
